What is knowledge gap analysis?

Published September 10, 2026 · Reviewed by the Fidiora team

Definition

Knowledge gap analysis is the systematic identification of questions customers ask that your documentation does not answer well. It compares actual demand, from tickets and searches, against actual coverage, and produces a ranked list of content to write.

Why it matters

Most content roadmaps are written from intuition and produce articles nobody reads. Gap analysis replaces intuition with demand data, which usually reveals that the top three missing articles account for more volume than the twenty planned ones combined.

What to know

  • The inputs are ticket topics, help centre searches with no useful result, and AI questions that could not be grounded.
  • Rank by volume times cost to answer manually, not by how interesting the topic is.
  • Contradictions count as gaps, and they are more damaging than absences because they produce confident wrong answers.
  • Run it quarterly. Product changes create new gaps faster than anyone expects.
  • Deploying a grounded AI agent generates this data continuously as a by-product, which is its most underrated benefit.

An example

Example: an analysis shows two hundred tickets a month about a migration step, no article covering it, and an internal document explaining it that was never published. One publishing action removes two hundred monthly tickets.

Common mistakes

  • Writing a content plan without looking at ticket topic data
  • Ranking by topic interest rather than by volume and cost
  • Ignoring contradictory articles, which are worse than missing ones
  • Running the analysis once and never repeating it
Where Fidiora fits

Fidiora reports every question it could not answer from your content. That log is a continuously updated gap analysis built from real customer demand, so the next article you write is always the one that removes the most volume.

FAQ

Questions

How do I run a knowledge gap analysis?
Pull your top ticket topics by volume, check coverage for each, add zero-result help centre searches, and add any questions your AI assistant could not ground. Rank the combined list by volume and by how expensive each is to answer manually.
How often should I do it?
Quarterly for most teams, and immediately after a major release or pricing change. Both create new gaps at a rate that catches teams out.
What is the fastest way to close a gap?
Publish the internal answer. A large share of gaps are topics that are documented somewhere internally and were never made public, so the work is publishing rather than writing.
