What is cost per resolution?

Also known as: CPR

Definition

Cost per resolution is the fully loaded cost of genuinely solving one customer issue, including agent salaries and benefits, tooling, AI usage, and management overhead, divided by the number of issues resolved. It is the cleanest single number for judging whether a support investment is working.

Why it matters

Cost per ticket rewards closing tickets. Cost per resolution rewards solving problems, which is what the business is buying. The two diverge exactly where it matters: a team that closes tickets fast and generates repeat contacts looks efficient on the first metric and expensive on the second.

What to know

  • Include everything: salaries, employer costs, tooling, AI spend, QA, and the share of management time spent on support.
  • Divide by resolved issues, not by closed tickets, or repeat contacts will flatter the result.
  • Track it monthly. It is a ratio, so it moves when either the numerator or the denominator shifts.
  • Segment by issue type before drawing conclusions, since a refund and an integration fault are not comparable.
  • It is the right number for comparing an automation investment against a hiring plan.

How to calculate it

Cost per resolution = total fully loaded support cost / number of genuinely resolved issues

An example

Example: total monthly support cost of 42,000 dollars across salaries, tools, and AI, with 6,000 issues genuinely resolved, gives a cost per resolution of seven dollars. Automating a category that costs eleven dollars per resolution is where the saving is.

Common mistakes

  • Using closed tickets instead of resolved issues as the denominator
  • Leaving out employer costs, which typically add twenty to thirty percent to salary
  • Comparing your figure to a published benchmark built on different inclusions
  • Reading a single month in isolation rather than the trend
Where Fidiora fits

Fidiora makes the numerator legible. Because you pay a published rate per genuine resolution and nothing for seats, the AI portion of cost per resolution is a fixed known number, and the only variable left to manage is how much volume needs a human.

Questions

What is a good cost per resolution?
It depends on issue complexity and labour market, so external benchmarks are close to useless. What matters is your own trend and the gap between your cheapest and most expensive issue categories, which is where the savings live.
How is cost per resolution different from cost per ticket?
Cost per ticket divides by tickets closed, which rewards closing. Cost per resolution divides by issues genuinely solved, which penalises repeat contacts. The second is the honest number.
What should be included in the cost?
Fully loaded salaries including employer costs, all support tooling, AI and automation spend, quality assurance, training, and the proportion of management time devoted to support.
