What is zero-touch resolution?
Also known as: no-touch resolution, fully automated resolution
Published September 10, 2026 · Reviewed by the Fidiora team
Zero-touch resolution describes a customer issue solved end to end without any human involvement, including any back-office step. The customer asks, the system answers or acts, the issue closes, and no agent ever opens the ticket. It is the strictest form of support automation.
Why it matters
Zero-touch is the only automation category that changes headcount maths, because it removes the contact from the human queue entirely rather than shortening it. It is also the category most often overstated, since many claimed zero-touch resolutions quietly involve a human doing a back-office step.
What to know
- Count it strictly: any human touch, including a back-office lookup, disqualifies the contact.
- Zero-touch rates vary enormously by issue mix, so a single company-wide percentage tells you very little.
- The best candidates are high-volume, well-documented, and reversible, in that order of importance.
- Reopen rate on zero-touch contacts is the honesty check, and it should be tracked separately.
- A rising zero-touch rate alongside a rising reopen rate means you are automating failure.
How to calculate it
An example
Example: a customer asks where their order is at midnight, the system retrieves the tracking status, answers, and the customer never writes again. No agent saw the conversation, so it counts. If someone in operations had to check the warehouse, it does not.
Common mistakes
- Counting contacts where a human performed a hidden back-office step
- Reporting a company-wide rate across incomparable issue types
- Chasing the rate without tracking reopens on those same contacts
- Automating irreversible actions to raise the number
Fidiora bills exactly on this outcome. A resolution is only billable when the issue was genuinely closed without a handoff, which means the number on your invoice and the number in your zero-touch report are the same number.
